Once again Britain is sitting on the side-lines. We were excluded from talks about the future of NATO recently by the United States; so much for the special relationship. Britain is no longer the power that it once was either economically, defensively or diplomatically.
Gone are the days when Britain "punched above its weight " from a defence point of view. The US is now choosing to find more suitable partners.
There is a diesel supply crisis and Britain was in danger of being left out of talks to alleviate the supply problems. The major powers are tempted to leave Britain out in the cold and on the side-lines. Our country is now becoming the victim of adverse events.
I was of the opinion that Britain would be better off if it joined the European single market to improve its economic prospects. Now I am not so sure. I have now reached the conclusion that we should re-join the EU wholeheartedly. It looks as though the EU will offer us a similar treaty to what we had before. I conclude that we would be better off also joining the Schengen area to help us develop a joint migration strategy. We should also join the the Euro to help to reduce government bond yields and reduce government interest rates that we have to pay.
Britain has got a lot to offer to EU in terms of defence strategy and economic markets. Britain should join in ventures to compete with the US and China in the Machine Learning or "AI" industry. We should jointly work with our European partners to develop IT technologies that improve our economy and society whilst protecting human life and dignity.
Britain needs to work with the rest of Europe to develop sensible clean energy policies which will alleviate the problems of climate change.
Europe needs a defence strategy to protect ourselves from potential enemies without having to constantly rely upon the US. We need to develop a defensive strength that augments NATO ,and which is strong enough to make our US ally pay more regard about European requirements.
Britain cannot act alone, so our politicians should stop being "Lily-Livered" and should have the courage to declare that being back in the EU is in our national interest. to improve our economic, diplomatic and defensive strength.
The Canadian Prime Minister has shown the way by proposing an Association between the EU and Canada, because of shared democratic, economic and social values. The British Prime Minister should do the same but go one step further . We are after all European and we should be where we belong, and that is at the heart of Europe.
