This picture was taken of the sky over London at around noon on the 17th of April 2010. Wall to wall blue; not a cloud in the sky and no contrails. This is a sight I have not seen for many, many years. The same high pressure system that has brought us a cloudless sky has also brought the volcanic ash to ground all jets. What a fantastic sight: I never thought it would happen - well over London anyway.The view and the quiet can be appreciated for a short period of time. But, what about those who are marooned by this act of nature? What about the jobs which are affected? What about the sick and distressed who are awaiting food and other aid? What about those who are waiting to fly to London or New York for life saving medical care?
Modern life is completely dependent upon air travel. We must think very carefully before any action is taken to limit air travel and need to plan an effective alternative.
